Router Bits Moving During a Cut
We continue to get reports of router bits moving mid-cut on the router tables.
This is a terrible thing to happen at one of the final stages of your project.
The reports are occasional - several per month.
They are not linked to a specific router, router table, or bit.
There is no way that is the result of the router or lift mechanism.
The router is supported by two or four fine threaded rods that must rotate together to allow the router to move. And the router should only move down.
It has to be collets, bits, or operator error.
We now change all the collets every three months (previously every six months), and inspect and clean the collets weekly.
If the collet or bit shaft is scored, it would likely hold better.
We are just not tightening them enough.
The attached document was published in 2023 and posted on the wall near the router tables.
Please follow the guidelines and save yourself some disappointment.
Thanks
