Woodworker Guild Privilege Card Information

Taken from the June 2024 Plank article by Mike Thomas:

The Guild Board of Directors awards Privilege Cards (P-Cards) to members who volunteer in managerial or other Board identified positions. A P-Card holding member may use the shop on off hours IF TWO OR MORE P-CARD MEMBERS ARE PRESENT AND ONE OF THEM ASSUMES THE RED APRON ROLE.

You can obtain a P-Card by first speaking to any Board member. You/They will identify the area that you are interested

in volunteering (Shop Management, Cluster Instruction, Advanced Instruction, Other). The Board member will direct you to the Board Director that is responsible for the area that you choose. You will discuss your interest with the Board

Director, and they will lay out a training path for you to follow. They will provide a document to record your training

taken. Once you complete the training, return the training record to the Board Director, and discuss your progress. The

training record will be reviewed by the Board Director. If approved, they will forward it to the P-Card committee who

will review and issue you a P-Card.

To retain a P-Card, you must volunteer at least 24 hours in the following areas:

• Manager – covers manager and assistant manager function

• Mentor – both shop and lather mentors

• Instructor – either Basic Training or Advanced Training

The remaining 24 hours can be any form of volunteer function that is available. The only exception to these requirements is a function that is deemed invaluable to the Board of Directors and operation of our shop and are voted on by the board. In total, you must volunteer a minimum of 48 hours annually.

With this privilege comes responsibility. The Shop Manager might ask you to assist another Guild member or other task they require. On off hours, you might be required to assume the role of the Red Apron. The Red Apron is the managing member for off hours activity. The Red Apron is responsible for opening and/or closing the Woodshop.

A more detailed review of the P-Card requirements are in the Guild Operations Manual section 2.2.4.
